    It's actually not that hard. If you examine the wall next to the stairs before you go to the machine it tells you how to solve the puzzle; definitely my favorite puzzle of the game. And it wasn't just a way to waste time, once you finish that puzzle you clear one of the locks on the door where you encounter Nicholai - depending on how you choose to play - Nemesis and get the security card to access the rest of the facility.
